Helping women in Portugal to support an inclusive digital transition
In 2016, we launched Atelier Digital in Portugal with the goal of helping youngsters to succeed in the digital economy by learning digital skills -- since then, we are pleased to have trained more than 100,000 people in the country. Technology has a critical role to play in building an inclusive, sustainable and green recovery, and it is clear that, in this transition, certain groups are more impacted in the future of work than others: those without a college degree, ethnicminorities and women. In fact, according to McKinsey analysis, women have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic worldwide, representing 54% of overall job losses, though they make up 39% of global employment.
Today, the Portuguese EU Presidency is hosting the Social Summit, in which one of their priorities is to bridge the gender gap in the labour market. We believe the commitments they set are for everyone. That’s why we are focusing our efforts to make sure our Grow with Google programs will reach everyone. We launched our new
Google for Startups Immersion: Women Founders, and we are dedicated to tackling job inequalities through
scholarships for women with the Google Career Certificates. Since 2017, we have trained over 2 million women in digital skills and helped 1 million women in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to find a job, grow their business or grow in their career
1. In Portugal, based on an independent and ongoing survey by Ipsos since 2017, 53% of those who have participated in Atelier Digital training and chose to respond to the survey were women
2.
In alignment with the government’s priorities, we want to make sure that no one will be left behind, and, today, in addition to our digital skills programs, we are announcing ten
#IamRemarkable sessions for women and other underserved populations, such as the LGBTQI+ community in Portugal by the end of this year. #IamRemarkable is an initiative to empower women and underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond, thereby breaking modesty norms and glass ceilings. Since November 2018 the initiative has reached over 77,000 participants across 37 countries in Europe, helping women to feel more confident, to be more active in self promotion and/or to experience job and career growth

Our goal is to reach women in Portugal from different backgrounds, especially the ones in a vulnerable situation. We will start the training with a special Atelier Digital session for women, and will be partnering with local associations to find more women that could benefit the most from this program.
Public-private partnerships are the cornerstone of this work. And Google continues to join policy efforts led by the European Commission and others to help bridge the skills gap and drive digitization. Last year, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government, our commitment to Portugal to support an inclusive digital transition and offer the tools and trainings that will help on digital skills and employability, boosting Portugal's economic recovery.
1 Analysis by Google on the basis of an independent survey conducted by Ipsos between the period of September 2016 and February 2021, in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
2 The data is based on results of online research run by Ipsos and Ipsos MORI among Google Atelier Digital online platform users in Portugal. The percentages shown are based on survey responses from users trained from January 2017 to September 2020 in online trainings, with surveys conducted between January 2017 and February 2021. The survey is conducted online. All 84,038 Google Atelier Digital online trained users who have opted-in to market research are invited to take part (trained users are those registered users who watched at least 7 videos and spent at least 1 hour of active learning time and agreed to be surveyed). 1,867 online trained users completed the survey. Results of the survey are weighted to the known population of trainees in terms of the proportion who received certification for their training.
3 The data is based on results of online research run by Ipsos MORI among #IamRemarkable participants who attended workshops over the period November 2019 to April 2021. In total, 31,881 participants from European countries responded to the satisfaction survey offered to them at the end of the workshop. Of these, 84% were women. 3 months after their workshop, individuals who agreed to be contacted again were emailed an impact survey. 3,257 European participants responded to this, of which 2,831 were women (87%). Of these 2,831 women, 86% said they attributed an improvement in their self-promotion to the workshop (through supporting peers/colleagues to self-promote OR practicing self-promotion themselves more OR devoting more time to raising their profile at work), 77% said they felt more confident (by feeling more confident at work OR feel more confident about their professional future OR believe their increased confidence benefits their team/group) and 42% said they had experienced job or career growth (got promoted/changed career path OR took on new work responsibilities OR got a pay rise OR got a new job OR found an internship OR started own business OR started freelancing OR launched an entrepreneurial project OR pursued additional training).
